Happy St Patrick’s Day to everyone. Everybody is Irish today. I recommend a beer and a fight.

Onto, today’s topic… The ‘new’ translation of the ordinary form of the liturgy in English. Being South Africa, something got lost in the implementation of what was expected from the Vatican. The newer translation (those that know me know that I insist on the Latin form, although I do believe the newer post Vatican II form to be valid) apparently was implemented early. Those that really hate Catholicism and the history of the Church and stay in the fold for whatever reason and seem to believe that the Magisterium works like some kind of democracy are apparently upset.

‘I think the church (sic) has been very lucky that the South Africans jumped the gun’, says self-important Thomas Reece. We can expect some kind of ‘worldwide problem’ when the version closer to the original Latin is rolled-out everywhere else. Like we did when the Latin changed to the vernacular I wonder? ‘Once again the Vatican isn’t listening to the critics’, the twit drones on. Since when did the Vatican listen to its critics? The Vatican is the guardian of Truth, Christ’s appointed agent. The critics are wrong and Reese a poseur if he believes he is doing anything to advance its God-given role. Did Reese take the necessary vows of obedience to the Holy Father and Church his Jesuit vocation demand? One wonders.

Clement Armstrong, a parishioner of Bryanston, is unhappy. The ‘older’ members of his parish, he ‘thinks’ will have the same view. No doubt they will, they’re the fools who have stood by while clown masses, Beatles songs and handshakes have replaced a two thousand year old tradition of reverence to the Holy Trinity and Our Blessed Lady. Other parishioners seem to have forgotten the doctrine of original sin and view the ‘Mea Culpa’ element as problematic. You can imagine what their views on the state of grace and the sacrament of confession are.

Reverend Efrem Tesoldi, who obviously speaks no Latin and very little English (thereby giving him an authority second to none to comment), agrees. Nobody less than Bishop Kevin Dowling in his race to retirement feels the same way.

After having watched two six year olds serve at a Latin Mass over the last weekend and flawlessly manage the responses, I have no sympathy for the complainers who feel the English is ‘difficult’. Who exactly do you think you are to contradict the Holy Father? Who exactly do you think you are to elevate yourselves to God and deny that you are sinners? Have any of you actually read the Vatican II documents? I bet very few of you remember much of your catechism or have any insight into the councils before Vatican II.

I think the best word to describe you all is ‘Protestant’. You don’t like the liturgy or what it stands for obviously, let alone the history and message of the Church. Go join the Lutherans. You’re no more Catholic than John Calvin.
